Condoms and STI Protection — The Science
Overall Effectiveness
With correct and consistent use, latex condoms reduce the risk of:
- HIV transmission: by 80–95%
- Chlamydia: by approximately 70–80%
- Gonorrhea: by approximately 60–70%
- Syphilis: by approximately 50–70% (depends on lesion location)
- HPV: partial protection (skin-to-skin contact areas not covered)
- Herpes (HSV-2): approximately 30–50% reduction

Why Isn't It 100%?
Condoms are not 100% effective against all STIs because:
- Skin-to-skin transmission: Some infections (HPV, herpes) can transmit via areas not covered by the condom
- User error: Incorrect application, not using for the entire encounter, or breakage
- Lubricant incompatibility: Oil-based lubricants causing microtears
Why Certification Matters for Protection
A condom that breaks or leaks provides no protection. This is why ULEX® Premium Condoms are certified to the highest standards:
- CE 0197 (EU Medical Device regulation)
- TÜV Rheinland (independent verification)
- ISO 13485 (quality management)
- 100% electronic pinhole testing
- Air burst testing per ISO 4074
A poorly manufactured condom — however thin or well-lubricated — is not a safe condom.
HIV Specifically
HIV transmission requires the virus to enter the bloodstream via mucous membranes or blood. Latex condoms are impermeable to HIV — the virus cannot pass through intact latex. Studies show consistent condom use reduces male-to-female HIV transmission risk by over 90%.
