How to Use a Condom Correctly: Step-by-Step Guide
By ULEX Editorial Team • 4/5/2026
Before You Start
✅ Check the expiry date on the wrapper ✅ Feel for the air bubble — if it's flat, discard it ✅ Never use teeth or scissors to open — use your fingers at the notch
Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Make sure you are erect before putting on the condom.
Step 2: Tear the wrapper carefully at the notch. Remove the condom gently — don't unroll it in advance.
Step 3: Identify the correct way up — the condom should unroll downward, not inside-out. If you accidentally put it on inside-out, discard and use a new one.
Step 4: Place the condom on the tip of the penis. Pinch the tip with your thumb and forefinger to remove air — this is the reservoir space.
Step 5: While still pinching the tip, roll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis.
Step 6: Use water-based lubricant on the outside for comfort. ⚠️ Never use oil-based lube with latex condoms.
After Sex
Step 7: Withdraw while still erect — hold the base of the condom to prevent it from slipping off.
Step 8: Carefully remove and wrap in tissue. Never flush condoms — dispose in waste bin.
Common Mistakes
❌ Putting it on too late (after any penetration) ❌ Forgetting to pinch the tip ❌ Rolling it on inside-out, then flipping it ❌ Using oil-based lubricants ❌ Not withdrawing before losing erection
