What Are Latex Condoms?

Latex condoms are made from natural rubber latex, a material derived from the sap of rubber trees. They are the most common type of condom worldwide and have been used for decades. Latex is highly elastic, strong, and provides excellent protection against both pregnancy and STIs.

ULEX® condoms are made from natural rubber latex. Check each product page for its applicable conformity information and instructions. Ultra-thin latex condoms such as ULEX® Classix (0.06 mm) are designed for a natural feel.

  • Most widely available and affordable option
  • Highly elastic and stretchy for comfortable fit
  • Excellent barrier against STIs and pregnancy
  • Available in ultra-thin variants (down to 0.06mm)
  • Not suitable for people with latex allergy
  • Incompatible with oil-based lubricants

What Are Polyurethane Condoms?

Polyurethane condoms are made from a synthetic plastic material. They were developed as an alternative for people with latex allergies and for those who want to use oil-based lubricants. Polyurethane is not derived from natural rubber, making it completely safe for latex-allergic individuals.

Polyurethane can be manufactured thinner than latex, offering potentially greater sensitivity. However, polyurethane condoms are less elastic than latex, which some users find affects fit and comfort.

  • Safe for people with latex allergy
  • Compatible with oil-based lubricants
  • Can be made thinner than latex for increased sensitivity
  • Less elastic than latex (may affect fit)
  • More expensive than latex condoms
  • Same level of STI and pregnancy protection

Which Is Better: Polyurethane or Latex?

For most people, latex condoms are the better choice — they are more affordable, more elastic, and widely available. Premium ultra-thin latex condoms like ULEX® Classix (0.06mm) provide excellent sensitivity while maintaining superior strength.

Polyurethane condoms are the better choice if you have a latex allergy or need to use oil-based lubricants. They provide the same level of protection but at a higher cost and with slightly less elasticity.

💡 Expert Tip: If you or your partner experience itching, redness, or irritation after using latex condoms, you may have a latex sensitivity. Switch to polyurethane or polyisoprene condoms and consult a healthcare provider.

Can You Use Oil-Based Lubricants with Latex Condoms?

No. Oil-based lubricants (including baby oil, petroleum jelly, lotion, and coconut oil) degrade latex and can cause the condom to break within minutes. Only water-based or silicone-based lubricants are safe to use with latex condoms.

Polyurethane condoms are compatible with oil-based lubricants, which is one of their key advantages. However, oil-based lubricants are generally not recommended for vaginal use as they can disrupt the natural pH balance and are harder to wash away.

Safety Comparison

Both latex and polyurethane condoms provide excellent protection against pregnancy and STIs when used correctly. CE 0197 certified condoms of either material undergo the same rigorous testing standards, including electronic testing for pinholes and burst pressure testing.

The key safety consideration is proper use: check expiration dates, store correctly, use appropriate lubricants, and never reuse condoms. Material choice does not affect protection level — both are equally effective when used properly.
