How Condoms Are Made
Step 1: Natural Latex Harvesting
All ULEX® Premium Condoms start with natural rubber latex from Hevea brasiliensis trees. The latex sap is collected, preserved with ammonia, and transported to the manufacturing facility.
Step 2: Compounding
The latex is compounded with:
- Sulfur: for vulcanization (cross-linking the rubber)
- Zinc oxide: accelerates vulcanization
- Antioxidants: extend shelf life
- Preservatives: prevent microbial growth
Step 3: Dipping
Glass or metal formers (shaped like a penis) are dipped into the compound latex bath — typically 3 times to build up the correct wall thickness (0.06mm for ULEX® ultra thin variants).
Step 4: Vulcanization
The dipped formers pass through an oven where heat triggers vulcanization — the process that transforms liquid latex into elastic, resilient rubber.
Step 5: Stripping and Rolling
The dried condom is stripped from the former and the rim is rolled to create the characteristic rolled-base look.
Step 6: 100% Electronic Testing
Every single ULEX® condom undergoes electronic pinhole testing — a low electrical current is passed through the condom. Any pinhole creates a circuit, flagging the unit for rejection.
Step 7: Statistical Testing
Randomly selected units are tested for:
- Air burst (volume and pressure) per ISO 4074
- Water leak test
- Tensile strength (elongation at break)
- Freedom from holes test
Step 8: TÜV Rheinland Certification
ULEX® submits manufacturing processes and product samples to TÜV Rheinland — an independent German testing laboratory — for annual certification. This voluntary certification goes beyond the mandatory CE 0197 requirement.
Step 9: Lubrication and Packaging
Certified condoms are lubricated with premium silicone lubricant and sealed in individual foil wrappers. 14 units are packed in the ULEX® Premium box.
CE 0197 Marking
The CE 0197 marking on every ULEX® box confirms that the product has been assessed by Notified Body 0197 and meets the requirements of EU Regulation 2017/745 (Medical Devices).
